The Master's Program
The Department of Political Studies offers a one-year master's degree program with emphasis in the fields of Political Theory, International Relations, Comparative politics, particularly the politics of developing countries, Canadian government and politics, and Public Policy. This program is designed to allow students to graduate within one academic year through a combination of course work and a Major Research Project. The Department also offers a thesis-based MA, in select circumstances. Eligible students receive competitive financial support for their program and professional development opportunities such as Teaching and Research Assistant positions.
In comparison to graduate programs at other Canadian universities, the Political Studies MA program at the University of Saskatchewan is relatively small, with 10-12 new graduate students admitted each year. The smaller program has definite advantages over its larger counterparts as more time and attention is given to student interests and concerns, especially to the planning of each student's course of study. Greater coordination is achieved among faculty in order to provide the desired courses and there is closer contact between students and faculty both in course and project work.
Many of the Department's MA graduates have gone on to Ph.D. programs at Canadian universities (such as Carleton, Dalhousie, Calgary, York, Toronto, Western, Queen's, Alberta, and McGill) and international universities. Other graduates have done additional post-graduate work in business administration, law, philosophy, and education. Still others have found employment working in professional fields such as government, education, business, and the non-profit sector. Our program boasts strong success in career placement for students following the completion of their Master’s degree.
If, after carefully reviewing our webpages, you still have questions regarding the program and application process, please contact asg.gradapplications@usask.ca.

Graduate Programs and Advanced Studies
Many of our graduates go on to further study, either in interdisciplinary graduate programs, masters programs in one of the participating departments, or in Law, Policy Studies or MBA studies. There are a few interdisciplinary graduate programs in International Studies, International Development Studies or Latin American Studies.
A growing number of Canadian universities offer interdisciplinary graduate programs in International Development Studies. These include:

Area Studies (e.g. Asian Studies, Latin American Studies) are highly developed in many American universities, whereas Development Studies is taught in relatively few institutions.
Specialized ‘taught Master’s’ programs are offered by Universities outside of Canada, especially in the United Kingdom. Many are designed to appeal to students with special areas of interest, such as human rights, gender and development, conflict resolution, refugee studies, and rural development.
Among the best known of the British institutions offering programs related to International Studies are:
- Essex University (Political Studies)
- London School of Economics
- University of Bradford
- University of East Anglia
- University of Manchester
- University of Sussex (Institute for Development Studies)
To investigate opportunities for graduate studies related to International Studies in the United Kingdom and in Europe start with the following websites maintained by major scholarly associations (particularly in Development Studies):
