There are a variety of scholarships and bursaries available to students in the Department of Geography and Planning. Students are also eligible for general College of Arts and Science awards, and are encouraged to apply for external awards in addition to those provided by the university.

University of Saskatchewan Scholarships & Bursaries 

Bursaries

October 1 is the deadline to apply for most University of Saskatchewan bursaries through the PAWS Scholarships and Bursaries channel. Bursaries are usually awarded to students in financial need, but may have additional criteria. See each award listing for details.

This bursary was established in 1999 to provide financial assistance and to recognize academic achievement and service to the environtment, by undergraduate students pursuing studies in the areas of environment studies or geography and who are members of the Environmental Studies Student Association (ESSA).

Award value: varies, minimum $1,000

  • Open to Environmental Biology, Environment and Society, Environmental Earth Sciences, Geography and Hydrology majors who have completed at least two years of study in an undergraduate degree program, and who are members of the Environmental Studies Student Association (ESSA).
  • Selection is based on academic achievement, financial need, and demonstrated service to the environment.

Apply through the Scholarships and Bursaries channel in PAWS to complete the financial need calculator and provide a statment demonstrating your involvement in organizations and activities with an environmental focus.

Your application must also include a character reference submitted by you or your reference to asg.studentawards@usask.ca.

This award was established in memory of Todd Mitchell (BA'19) to provide financial support to continuing undergraduate students in the College of Arts & Science who are pursuing studies in Regional and Urban Planning.

Award value: $2,000

  • Open to continuing undergraduate students in the College of Arts & Science who have declared a major in Regional and Urban Planning. To be eligible, students must demonstrate financial need and be in good academic standing.
  • Selection is based upon financial need.

  • Open to the graduating Geography major with the highest average at fall or spring convocation.
  • Selection is based on academic achievement.

The Saskatchewan Professional Planners Institute annually presents a $200.00 award and certificate to a full-time fourth year student registered in the Regional and Urban Development program. The student must be eligible for graduation and obtain the highest scholastic standing in the third and fourth year courses as designated by the College of Arts & Science. The recipient must also be a Student Member in standing with SPPI. No application.

Saskatchewan Professional Planners' Institute Awards

Established 1993 in memory of Carl McLeod, former Saskatoon City Commissioner, and Art Jourdin, veteran and long-time City of Saskatoon employee.

Award value: varies

  • Open to continuing undergraduate students enrolled in the Regional and Urban Development Program who have completed an individual or group urban planning project or paper with the potential to contribute to contemporary issues in urban, regional, or community planning in Canada.
  • The project or paper must clearly identify a research/design problem, and have the potential to contribute to contemporary issues in urban, regional, or community planning in Canada.

To apply, submit a project or paper in urban, regional, and/or community planning, not previously submitted for any course, to asg.studentawards@usask.ca.

Annual application deadline: March 31st

This scholarship was established by emeritus professor of Geography Dr. A.K. Chakravarti, to recognize the academic achievement of students pursuing a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree with a specialization in physical geography. Dr. Chakravarti conducted research in the Department of Geography from 1965-1994, and developed Honours, M.Sc. and PhD. programs in climatology.

Award value: Varies

  • Open to students entering their final year of a BSc Honours degree in EES, ENSO, or Hydrology. Preference to students minoring in Water Science, or who have taken the following classes: GEOG 233 (Weather and Climate), GEOG 333 (Global Climate Change), GEOG 390 (Hydrometerology) GEOL 330 (Climate History).
  • Selection is based on academic achievement.
  • No application.

Established in honour of Pegi Richards, a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan, to recognize the academic achievement of a student enrolled in an Honours program in Geography.

Award value: varies

  • Open to students enrolled in the Honours degree program in Geography, Environment and Society, Environmental Earthy Sciences, or Hydrology.
  • Selection is based upon academic achievement.
  • No application.

This scholarship was established through the bequest of 200 shares of Pine Point Mines, and alternates between the Department of Geography & Planning, and the Department of English.

Award value: varies

  • Open to a student in the third or fourth year of Honours Geography degree who, in their previous year, achieved the highest standing in their program.
  • Selection is based on academic achievement.
  • No application.

Established by the family and friends of Thomas Fraser and Darren Gatrell, Community Planners with the Department of Municipal Government in Prince Albert, who died in a tragic airplane accident on October 12, 1993, following a meeting in a northern community.

Award value: varies

  • Open to undergraduate students who are entering the third or fourth year of a degree in Regional and Urban Planning who have completed a paper on the topic of planning in northern Canada (north of the 53rd parallel). 
  • Selection is based on the merits of a planning in northern Canada paper, academic achievement, and demonstrated involvement in community activities, as determined by the award committee.

Most Outstanding Graduate
