Economics is the science describing the production and distribution of wealth. The undergraduate Economics program provides students with the theoretical and empirical tools to comprehend, assess and analyze the many pressing issues and problems of society in an economic context. Areas of study include basic and advanced economic theory, public policy, labour and regional development, as well as the quantitative and historical aspects of economics.

An undergraduate degree in Economics provides an excellent academic background for students interested in advanced studies in accounting, business, commerce, communications, finance, international studies, journalism, law or politics. A Master’s or Ph.D. degree can be a significant advantage in terms of career opportunities. The University of Saskatchewan’s highly regarded undergraduate Economics program has provided our students with solid foundations to successfully pursue advanced degrees in economics at the U of S as well as in leading universities in Canada, the U.S., the U.K. and France.

• Program Overview

The Business Economics Program combines courses in the Department of Economics and the Edwards School of Business to produce a degree which provides the student with a rigorous background in both economics and commerce, with special emphasis in economics, so as to prepare students for the world of business, finance, and public service. Students trained in our program will be able to apply their specialized knowledge to practical economic problems in their chosen area of employment. Moreover, they will be better equipped to enter the private and public sectors as business economists. In addition, in this program the student becomes familiarized with both economics and commerce from a liberal arts perspective thereby providing the students with a unique, valuable and flexible approach to these areas of study.

• Program Overview

This program is available to students who have completed another degree. At present, students may choose to complete a P.D.S.C. in Economics. The requirements are basically the same as the major requirements for the Four-year program, but students are not required to complete the Distribution Requirements (Requirements 1-5). Students who complete the PDSC are not eligible to upgrade it to a Four-year Degree or Honours.

This minor may be taken in conjunction with any degree in the College of Arts & Science excluding Economics or Business Economics.

The Minor average in Economics will be calculated using the grades earned in all courses eligible to be included in the Minor program requirements. Students must complete at least two-thirds of the program requirements (rounded to the nearest highest multiple of 3 credit units) using courses offered by the University of Saskatchewan to meet the Residency requirement.
