Welcome to the Department of Drama

Welcome to the Drama Department, the University of Saskatchewan's home of Canada's and the Commonwealth's first and oldest theatre program in this discipline!

We are one of nine departments in the Division of Humanities & Fine Arts in the College of Arts and Science. Our Department's distinctive personality centers on a diverse mixture of creative exploration and rigorous intellectual pursuit, balancing the freedom of its artistic opportunities within the variety of theoretical and practical experiences theatre can offer.

We're a vibrant contributor to Saskatchewan art and culture, with our Greystone Theatre presenting a four play season from the classical and contemporary repertoire in the Emrys Jones Theatre. But our impact extends beyond our borders, as many of our faculty and alumni are or have been showcased on both national and international stages.

Want to know more about the Department of Drama? Take a moment and explore our site. You'll find everything from our departmental mission statement to photos of our current and past season's shows, even renderings of student designer's creations. There's information on all aspects of our programs and activities: who we are, what we do; our programs and productions; our history and a sense of our future. Whether you're thinking of getting a degree, considering enrolling in a class or just planning to attend one of our productions, consider checking out the Department of Drama.

But theatre is a live performing experience, and even a great website is no replacement for good old human contact. So take a look, and if you have any questions, drop into the John Mitchell Building on campus. Or send us an email or give us a call. We'll do our best to book your tickets, or answer your questions and your needs.

We are happy to see our students joining us back on campus this fall, September 2021!

Want to learn more about our past production Gordon Winter, which ran from March 31 to April 3, 2021? Here's an interview with the show's director Deneh'Cho Thompson on Homelands with Andrea Ledding. He's a Drama department faculty member and coordinator for the wîcêhtowin Theatre Program. In the interview, they discuss the play as well as Pe kiyokake ekwa achimoostahwinahn - an Indigenous Theatre Conference he is also hosting.

Previously, we honoured Professor Emeritus Henry Woolf, a retired faculty member and former head of the Department of Drama, by naming a theatre space for him. Here is a slideshow that was shown at the ceremony featuring images and video from Prof. Woolf's influential career in the Department of Drama and the Saskatoon theatre community.
