There are a variety of awards, bursaries and scholarships available for students in the Department of Art & Art History. Students are also eligible for general College of Arts & Science scholarships and awards, and are encouraged to apply for extrernal awards in addition to those provided by the university. Bursaries

Award Value: $500

  • Open to upper-year, undergraduate students enrolled in the B.F.A. or B.Mus degree programs
  • Selection will be based on academic achievement and financial need

  • Open to students who have been admitted formally to an Honours program in the College of Arts and Science in humanities or fine arts. Students must have a minimum average of 70%.

Scholarships and Awards (Application)

Award Value: $500 (two)

  • One prize will be given to a student for an artistic work and the other to a student for a written piece.
  • Open to continuing undergraduate or graduate students who have submitted an artistic work or have written an essay, thesis or dissertation on a subject related to the Great War. Submissions may form part of a student's academic program or a work submitted in the current academic year (as defined by May 1 to April 30 inclusive), as determined by the Award Committee.

Award website listing: Great War Centenary Prize

Award Value: varies, minimum $1,000

  • Open to students who have completed a minimum of 12 credit units in art history; have achieved a minimum cumulative average of 85% in all art history courses.
  • Based on the outcomes and benefits the travel will have for the student as described in their travel proposal.
  • Annually awarded in February.
  • Candidates may submit a cover letter with a one-page travel budget and proposal to visit an art museum, attend an art history conference, or to undertake learning activities pertinent to art history to Administrative Support Group in the College of Arts of Science.

Award Value: varies, approximately $1,000

  • Open to students in the third or fourth year of the Bachelor of Fine Arts program, with a specialization in sculpture.  Based on academic achievement and career aspirations in the area of sculpture.
  • Annually awarded in spring.
  • Candidates must submit a statement of no more than 200 words describing their career plans in the area of sculpture.

Award Value: $2,500 

  • Open to students with a declared major in History or in Art History.
  • Annually awarded in June.
  • Candidates may submit a 10-12 page original essay (2,500 to 3,000 words) on one of the topics: social history, intellectual history, history of Saskatchewan, or history of art. 
  • Eligible essays must be written in the current academic year.

Award website listing: Margaret E. Vanderhaeghe Award in History and Art History

Award Values: $2,500 max. for full-time studies & $1,000 max. for part-time studies

  • Open to students who are Canadian citizens or Permanent residents that reside in Saskatchewan, and who have enrolled in arts programs at accredited post-secondary institutions or recognized arts training institutions such as:
    • Undergraduate studies (full or part-time) for a career as a professional artist in any discipline.
    • Undergraduate or certificate studies (full or part-time) in applied arts (e.g., design and production in any arts discipline).
    • Undergraduate or certificate studies (full or part-time) in arts administration.
    • Training in certificate arts program (e.g., National Theatre School, Canada’s National Ballet School, or Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, etc.)
    • Training in summer arts programs or other part-time arts programs (e.g., Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, Globe Theatre, Persephone Theatre, and other dance, theatre, music, voice, literary, and media, or visual arts programs).
  • To be eligible, applicants must have lived and pursued their creative work and careers in the province for a min. of one year prior to the date of applying and live in SK for at least six months in a year.

Exception: An applicant who is temporarily absent from the province for an arts education opportunity may be eligible to apply if:

  • The absence is no more than four years and not recurring.
  • The applicant maintains permanent physical address in SK and intends to return to the province at the end of term (cannot receive funding for training from the jurisdiction of temporary residence).

  • Apply online at the Saskatchewan Arts Board’s Application Portal smartsimple.ca with the following:
    • A resume with relevant work, experience, and notable accomplishments.
    • A letter of acceptance from the enrolled institution.
    • Up to three letters of support (one min.) from individuals qualified to assess the artistic merit of your work and commitment to a career in the arts – arts instructors, mentors, or other professionals in the area in which you wish to study. The Letter of Support form must be sent direct from the referee to the Saskatchewan Arts Board.
    • A sample of recent work – digital image, video segment, audio segment, or writing sample (published or unpublished).

Award Value: $1000 (two)

  • Open to students entering the fourth year of a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Studio Art) degree program. 
  • Based on academic achievement.
  • No application required.

Awareds website listing: Athletes and Arts Scholarships

Award Value: varies, minimum $500 (2)

  • Open to undergraduate students enrolled in the College of ARts & Science who are completing their Bachelor of Fine Arts requirements in the year the award is made, and who have donated art work to the Department of Art & Art History. Eligible works must be chosen for accession and donated in the academic year of the award. 
  • Based on the merits of the donated works.
  • No application required.

Award Value: varies, minimum $1,000

  • Open to undergraduate students in year 2 or 3 of a degree program in Art & Art History, Drama, and Music. Non-departmental students with Fine Arts involvement, and first-year students after completing their first term, may also be considered.  
  • Selection is based on talent, merit, and promise, as determined by the award committee. 
  • No application required.

Award Value: varies

  • Open to undergraduate students enrolled in Fine Arts with a preference given to students engaged in the study of painting. To be eligible students will be enrolled in courses leading to a major in Art and Art History and the successful completion of at least one studio course in painting. The selection committee may require additional evidence of students' commitment to the study of painting. Should there be no candidates in the preferred group, the award will be open to all undergraduate students enrolled in Fine Arts including those students in a Bachelor of Music program in the College of Arts & Science.
