About this event

Speaker: Dr. Joshua Brand (PhD), Sciences Po

This talk extends my account for the morality of algorithm aversion where human decision-making is preferred even when AI systems outperform humans. Given the reciprocal nature of moral law, AI cannot serve as primary decision-makers, or duty-bearers, wherever humans hold correlative rights. I argue this aversion is not only morally defensible, but also virtuous by appealing to a particular form of courage, ‘hejira’. Extending this account to the virtues deepens the moral foundation for human judgement and intervention, informs debates on autonomy and responsibility limits of AI, and offers a blueprint for human flourishing in the age of AI thinking.

This colloquium is hosted by the University of Saskatchewan Department of Philosophy.
