Director's Notes

I keep telling the actors that in order to slow down, they're gonna have to speed up.
Seems contradictory.
One of the things that draws me to this story is that I think in a lot of ways, everybody in this story is telling the truth. There are inconsistencies and there are contradictions, but I think that everybody fundamentally believes that their cause is true. This play is a bit unknowable- and yet here in Saskatoon and at the Supreme court of Canada for that matter, this case has been decided by a majority.
In conversation with some lawyers about this play, it was explained to me that the law isn't very good at dealing with new technology.
Courts don't always fully understand what they're being asked to pass judgement on. But that might just be an expression of the fact that courts are made up of humans- or perhaps it's an expression of science being captured by financial interests.
I've enjoyed spending time with this cast considering how this tiny little amendment to the genetic make-up of a crop, unseeable by the human eye, has such profound implications on the lives of billions: How we've ceded control of large parts of our natural environment while simultaneously gaining great control over other parts. We save through destruction and we destroy through the act of saving.
We are complicated.
I hope you enjoy our show.
