Directors Notes:
After 18 months, the Department of Drama is so delighted to invite the audience back into the Emrys Jones Theatre and I would like to celebrate and thank you for supporting the first production Concord Floral by Jordan Tannahill. Jordan Tannahill is one of Canada’s most celebrated playwrights in addition to his talents as an author, filmmaker and multidisciplinary artist. At the ripe old age of 33, Jordan has already won two Governor-General Literary awards for Drama (2014 & 2018) with Concord Floral landing as a finalist in 2016 and most recently Tannahill was short-listed for the Scotiabank Giller Prize for his novel The Listeners. Concord Floral has been adapted into ten languages and performed across Canada, United States and Europe.
The play has created such a buzz across the western continents because it speaks both to millennials and to Generation Z for its direct conversations around the search for one’s identity in a world obsessed with consumerism, climate devastation and urbanization. Teenagers and young adults just want to be heard, seen and taken for who they are, rather than being subjected to society’s impression that they “...take everything for granted...and... are lazy and apathetic.” The play also deals with the reality of what it means to witness a horrible event and neither to say nor do anything about it. One should never be a complacent bystander. Baby boomers and Gen X’s need to admit it’s our complacency that has caused the current generation to rise up, to point fingers and to demand change.
Please mark in your calendars Monday November 29 at 3:00pm when Jordan Tannahill will present a live online lecture entitled “Staging Wild: Non-Human Subjectivity in Performance” as part of the Fine Art Research Lecture Series.
