Biography:

Sara Goering is an Associate Professor and member of the Program on Values in Society at the University of Washington, Seattle, Department of Philosophy. In addition, Professor Goering is the Program Director at the Northwest Center for Philosophy for Children. Her teaching and research focuses on philosophy, disability, and bioethics with an emphasis on issues surrounding autonomy, prenatal testing, genetic and social justice, and quality of life.

Professor Goering’s experience with Philosophy for Children includes formal training at the Institute for the Advancement of Philosophy for Children (IAPC), founded by Matthew Lipman; co-founding a philosophy summer camp for high school students and a philosophy outreach program at the University of Colorado, Boulder; contributing to the creation of the Center for the Advancement of Philosophy in Schools (CAPS) at California State University Long Beach; designing and teaching an undergraduate course at the University of Washington which brings university students and public school children together to engage in philosophical discussions; and most recently, co-editing, with Nick Shudak and Tom Wartenberg, the forthcoming book Philosophy in Schools: An Introduction for Philosophers and Teachers (from Routledge).

Professor Ripstein is the author of Force and Freedom: Kant's Legal and Political Philosophy (Harvard 2009) and Equality, Responsibility and the Law (Cambridge 1999). He is editor of Ronald Dworkin (Cambridge 2007) and co-editor of Law and Morality, 3rd ed. (Toronto 2007), and Practical Rationality and Preference (Cambridge 2001). He is currently writing a book on philosophical aspects of tort law. His popular work has appeared on Ideas on CBC Radio.
