Dancing Sky Theatre presents Operation Big Rock
A play by Joel Bernbaum inspired by a defining moment in Saskatchewan’s history: the cultural and political battle over the Big Rock (Mistasiniy in Cree) near Elbow, SK.
Ask geologists how the rock got there and they say it's a "glacial erratic." Ask First Nations elders and they say it was a boy who turned into a buffalo who turned into a sacred stone.
Operation Big Rock is set in the late 1950’s in the face of the Qu’appelle Valley being flooded to manage the drought. The play is actually a love story… about a giant rock: the 370-ton Mistasiniy and one U of S anthropologist’s spiritual journey as he risks his career and his family to fight for that rock.
Two Department of Drama faculty members are involved: director Angus Ferguson and actor Carol Greyeyes.
Two encore performances will be held at the University of Saskatchewan.
