Intro to Stained Glass: Lead Method

Discover the traditional art of leaded stained glass in this introductory course. Students will be introduced to lead method tools, pattern preparation, setup and layout.  Learn to measure, cut, grind, and fit glass before assembling your pieces using lead came channels which will be soldered and puttied to create strength and support. The result willl be beautiful luminous stained glass panels.

Syllabus

• Select a stained glass pattern suitable for the Lead Method
• Make two copies of the chosen pattern
• Prepare the work board using the paper pattern and layout bars
• Cut and organize the Bristol board pattern pieces
• Choose appropriate glass colors for the design
• Practice basic glass-cutting techniques using window glass
• Cut colored glass pieces to fit the pattern accurately
• Learn to cut and fit H and U lead came channels:
◦ Straight joints
◦ Curved angles
• Assemble the stained glass panel using lead came
• Learn proper soldering techniques for all lead joints
• Apply mudding/puttying to waterproof and strengthen the panel
• Clean and polish the finished stained glass project
• Complete final inspection and finishing touches 

Supplies

Supplies included in glass fee include:

  • Stained glass
  • Putty/mudding
  • Whitening material
  • Access to tools and equipment

Student supply kit (to be purchased separately: from instructor) includes:

  • Solder
  • Flux
  • Flux brush
  • Wire brush
  • Horseshoe nails
  • Lead came channel (2 kinds)*

*Note: Lead pieces should be stored in studio to prevent bending as they are 6 feet long
