A&S Faculty - Standards for Promotion and Tenure

The College of Arts and Science Standards for Promotion and Tenure document (December 12, 2025) regarding the expected contributions of faculty to the Administrative Responsibilities of the Department, College, and University (see section 6.a.) are as follows:

College administrative service includes membership on standing committees of Arts and Science Faculty Council and the College-level committees required by the Collective Agreement. A list of these committees will be updated by the Vice-Dean Faculty Relations by July 1 every year and will be distributed to Department Heads.

Service on ad hoc committees in the College of Arts and Science may also contribute to meeting the standards for tenure and promotion. However, the candidate should include in the case file information about the scope and nature of the work to demonstrate the contribution was equivalent to one of the standing committees.

Service to other Colleges, including the College of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, is considered University level administration.

At the point of application for tenure as an Assistant Professor or Assistant Professor of Teaching, a fair and reasonable contribution, at the department level, or the college or university levels, is required.

At the point of application for tenure as, or promotion to, Associate Professor, a fair and reasonable contribution, at the department level AND either at the college OR university levels, is required.

At the point of application for tenure as, or promotion to, Associate Professor of Teaching, a fair and reasonable contribution, at the department level, or the college or university levels, is required. This contribution would exceed that expected for the rank of Assistant Professor of Teaching.

At the point of application for tenure as, or promotion to, Professor, a fair and reasonable contribution, at the department, the college, AND the university levels, is required. This contribution would exceed that expected for tenure as, or promotion to, Associate Professor.

At the point of application for tenure as, or promotion to, Professor of Teaching, a fair and reasonable contribution at the department, the college, AND the university levels, is required, proportional to the candidate’s assigned duties. Evidence of leadership in committee work that is directly related to teaching and education practice is required at the department and either at the college or university levels.
