From Collation to Edition: One Small Step, One Giant Leap

In recent decades there has been a new birth of interest amongst scholars of India in the creation of text editions based on Sanskrit manuscripts. Many of these editions self-identify as "critical editions" and have reassuringly thick layers of apparatus on each page. But, on closer examination, they turn out to be published collations. This presentation articulates the difference between these two states of an edition, what it takes to move a text edition from being a collation to a critical edition and the benefit to be gained from doing this extra work.

Dominik Wujastyk is Singhmar Chair in Classical Indian Society and Polity at the University of Alberta.
