About the Chair

The Gabriel Dumont Chair in Métis Studies was established through a partnership between the Gabriel Dumont Institute (GDI) along with the College of Arts and Science (A&S) and is situated in the Department of Indigenous Studies at the University of Saskatchewan.

Aims and Objectives

This chair will increase research and teaching capacity in Métis Studies within A&S.

  • Create and disseminate original, high-impact research with a focus on and involving Métis peoples and communities
  • Supervision of Métis Studies focused graduate students and postdoctoral fellows
  • Update existing Métis courses in Indigenous studies and creation of Métis-specific undergraduate and graduate courses
  • Work with A&S and GDI to support GDI’s mandate of “transmission of Métis culture and the education of Saskatchewan Métis people”
  • Increase the capacity of Métis studies at the U of S
  • Disseminate the Chair and other Métis Studies work through public lectures, conferences, and workshops
  • Share Métis culturally safe and inclusive engagement strategies and research methodologies
  • Collaborate with GDI on projects and priorities
