Pattern Dyeing on Wool and Linen

Course Description

Explore the idea of dyeing patterns into fabric in this one day workshop. In the morning, students will create linocut stamps and will use them with thickened dyes to stamp repeated patterns onto wool and linen fabric. In the afternoon, students will learn fabric folding patterns, and additional clamping and tying techniques to create geometric patterns on a scarf

Course Fee: $140 (supplies not included) + $20 materials fee (required)

Syllabus

  • Lino-cut stamp making
  • Creating and using thickened dyes
  • Shibori style dyeing techniques on scarves 

Supplies

Materials fee includes:
  • Thickening agent
  • Dye powders
  • Dyeing chemicals
  • 100% cotton scarf

Students will also need to bring the following materials and tools:
  • Lino cutting tool
  • 1 Speedy-cut lino block
  • Notebook, pen and pencil,
  • N95 mask
  • Non-latex gloves (nitrile or other)
  • ½ meter of 100% wool fabric
  • ½ meter of 100% linen fabric
  • Elastic bands
  • Upholstery weight thread

 The fabric is best sourced at Periwinkle quilt shop.
