Artistic Jumpstart: Beginning Painting, Drawing, Sculpture & Photography

A fine art exploration for those looking to engage with a variety of art mediums. Each week, students will create artworks using different techniques, materials, and concepts within the major disciplines of the fine arts, including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, and mixed media.  This course is suitable for people who are new to artmaking, returning after a break, or seeking to expand their repertoire. 

Note: While the structure of the Artistic Jumpstart and Artistic Kickstart classes are similar, projects are not the same. Topics, media and/or techniques and concepts covered are different. Students who enjoy trying a variety of art topics are welcome to take both classes, in sequence or simultaneously.

Syllabus

  • Introduction to drawing with charcoal: still life
  • Introduction to drawing with pencil: landscapes and animals
  • Introduction to drawing with chalk pastel: landscapes
  • Introduction to drawing with oil pastel: trees and flowers
  • Introduction to sculpture with clay: small pieces- figures, animals and objects
  • Introduction to painting with watercolour: fish and flowers
  • Introduction to painting acrylic: Fauvist portraiture, colour and expression
  • Introduction to painting acrylic: abstraction techniques and exploration
  • Introduction to mixed media and collage: found inspiration, expression and creating meaning
  • Introduction to photography: abstraction, still life arrangements, and portraiture

Supplies

  • Mobile device (cell phone or tablet) with integrated camera or digital camera (DSL, mirrorless, compact, etc)
  • All tools and consumable materials for use in studio are included
  • Apron or workshirt to protect clothes
