About me
Carolyn Brooks is an Associate Professor of Sociology and the Interim Academic Coordinator for the Certificate in Criminology and Addictions Program (CCAP). Her research and teaching focus on social control and regulation, theoretical criminology, introductory sociology, youth resilience, and intimate partner violence.
Dr. Brooks is the co-editor of Critical Perspectives on Social Control and Social Regulation in Canada (with Mitch Daschuk and James Popham). This publication explores the dynamic interplay between social control mechanisms and marginalization, addressing topics such as social media, sex work, immigration, settler colonialism, digital surveillance, and social movements. Additionally, she has co-edited three editions of Marginality and Condemnation: A Critical Introduction to Criminology with Bernard Schissel and is currently collaborating on the fourth edition with Drs. Tim Kang and Scott Thompson. Marginality and Condemnation provides an overview of the rich and diverse nature of current criminological theory and research, covering topics such as environmental and green crime, imprisonment and social control, criminalizing race, the sex question in criminology, terrorism, masculinities and crime, media and social media representations of crime and constructions of criminality, restorative, transformative, and Indigenous justice, cybercrime, surveillance, and building an intersectional criminology.
