Colloquium Announcement: Moonshine old and new
Dr. Terry Gannon, University of Alberta
Speaker: Terry Gannon, University of Alberta
Title: Moonshine old and new
When: March 15 2017 (Wednesday) @ 1:30 PM
Where: Geology 261
Abstract: The oldest and best known moonshine began with the equation 196883+1=196884. This equation suggests an unexpected relation between modular functions and the Monster finite group. Borcherds' Fields medal was primarily for his work on this. More recently, identities such as 45+45=90 and (you guessed it) 2x10395+2x3520=27830 were discovered, 45+ which suggest a new and much more mysterious moonshine. My talk will start with the old, and end with the new. It is intended for a general audience.
