Abstract: I will give an overview of the seminal work by M. Semenov-Tyan-Shanski
(Funkcjonalnyj Analiz i Ego Prilozeniya, 1983) on the classical r-matrix and explain how the topic of r-matrices is pertinent to the question of integrability of the finite Toda lattice and generalizations. October-December, 1983.
