Abundant Access: Public Transit as an Instrument of Freedom

7:30 PM, Saturday March 12, Free Admission - Broadway Theatre

Great Places is pleased to present a public talk and book signing by Jarrett Walker, the internationally acclaimed public transit planner and author, at 7:30 PM on Saturday, March 12. Dr. Walker is author of Human Transit: How Clearer Thinking about Public Transit Can Enrich Our Communities and Our Lives and President at Jarrett Walker + Associates, based in Portland, Oregon. He is also Principal Consultant with MRCagney in Australia.

Entitled Abundant Access: Public Transit as an Instrument of Freedom, Dr. Walker’s talk will share insights from his public transit network design and policy projects undertaken throughout North America, Australia, New Zealand, and other countries around the world. With Saskatoon working to transform its transit services, the evening’s discussion will be timely and engaging.

Jarrett Walker has redesigned many bus networks, developed long-range strategic plans for transit, and written policies that guide the design of transit and its role in city-building. Some examples of places where Dr. Walker has worked include Seattle, Vancouver, Brisbane, Edmonton, Las Vegas, Toronto, Auckland, Houston, and Reykjavik.

Jarrett Walker has a Ph.D. in theatre arts and humanities from Stanford University and is likely the only person you will meet who has published in both the Journal of Transport Geography and Shakespeare Quarterly.

After the talk Jarrett Walker will be on hand for a book signing of Human Transit, along with a reception hosted by U of S Regional and Urban Planning and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. Turning the Tide bookstore will have copies of the book for purchase onsite.

Co-sponsors of this event are the City of Saskatoon and U of S Planning Students Association.

Great Places is a discussion forum that focuses on current issues related to the built environment in Saskatoon as shaped by architecture, urban planning, public art and landscape design. The group brings together visionary design professionals, government officials and citizens to discuss projects, initiatives, and precedents, locally and from abroad.
