Summer Camp Counsellors

The USask Museum of Natural Sciences invites applications for summer camp counsellors. Camp participants will explore the history of Earth and the evolution of life though hands-on science, art, drama, and physical activities anchored in geology, paleontology, and the museum’s dinosaur skeleton replicas, fossils, live animals and plants, rocks, and minerals.

Length of Assignment: June 24 to August 23, 2024. 

Rate of Pay: $17 per hour 

Hours: 37.5 hours per week: Monday to Friday 9am-4:30pm and/or 8:30am–4pm.

Location: USask Museum of Natural Sciences

Education: Candidates will have knowledge and interest in geology, paleontology, biology and/or ecology through high school, college, or university programs.

Experience: Demonstrated ability to engage children’s groups ages 6-10 in informal settings such as outdoors and museums. Candidates should be enthusiastic, conscientious, and responsible. They should also have good verbal communication skills and be committed to learning and improving. Candidates will also ideally have familiarity with Indigenous knowledge and culture, and an interest in presenting culturally inclusive science activities.

Experience in the following is an asset: 

  • Dramatic arts: theatre, puppetry, storytelling, and music.
  • Visual arts: drawing, painting, sculpting, and digital.
  • Creative play: using props and games to facilitate learning and understanding of topical concepts.

Duties:  Working in a highly collaborative setting, the camp counsellor will assist the camp coordinator in the smooth running of eight week-long summer camps with 28 kids per camp by helping plan and facilitate daily science, art, and culture activities, and lead campers on excursions to other locations on campus. 

Skills and Abilities: 

  • Work in a collaborative team setting.
  • Evaluate programs and provide constructive criticism to enhance program experience.
  • Research skills and writing skills.
  • Engaging youth and demonstrate adaptability and patience.
  • Deliver programs with a creative mindset and able to direct the energy of youth 6-10 years in positive directions.

Other:

  • Reqired: Police check and vulnerable sector search (documentation is required upon hiring)
  • First Aid certification an asset
  • Occupational Health and Safety certification an asset
