Dry Coloured Media I: Basic Techniques and Fundamentals

Pastels, coloured pencils, and pens are all equally fascinating and worthy of exploration. In this class, you will learn techniques that will allow you to create painterly effects. Each medium is introduced with techniques in drawing, colour blending, layering and creating texture. 

Syllabus

Pens:

  • Complete a mark making & value assignment
  • Complete an optical colour mixing assignment
  • Complete a sustained drawing using value, texture and colour

Coloured pencils:

  • Complete an assignment exploring the possibilities of one pencil
  • Complete a colour mixing assignment
  • Complete a colour theory assignment
  • Complete a colour mixing and mark making assignment

Pastels:

  • Complete a monochromatic assignment
  • Complete a masters inspired assignment
  • Complete a colour layering still life

Supplies

Pens:

  • Coloured ballpoint pens - pack of 8 - 12 colours BIC/STAEDTLER/PAPERMATE Inkjoy brands are excellent

Coloured pencils:

  • Prismacolour pencils:
    • True Blue
    • Ultramarine Blue
    • Poppy Red
    • Crimson Red
    • Magenta
    • Lemon Yellow
    • Canary Yellow
    • Sunburst Yellow
    • White
  • Colourless Blender
  • Bristol Vellum paper pad - 9x12
  • Plastic Eraser
  • Prismacolour two-hole sharpener or similar
  • Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits or similar
  • Q-tips

Pastels:

  • Warm and cool primaries and white of the brand of your choosing from Prismacolour NuPastel to Schminke & Sennelier - buy what suits your pocketbook
  • 20x26 Fabriano Tiziano Paper or Canson Mi-Tientes paper suitable for pastels in a variety of colours; white or cream, a dark and a mid toned
  • Tape or larger binder clips
  • Wax paper or newsprint paper to protect your work in transit
