Drawing II: Portraits

Prerequisite: Drawing I or equivalent experience

This 10-week course will focus on drawing portraits and achieving a likeness. The first 5 weeks will focus on structure and anatomy of the head from the larger skull form to individual smaller forms (eyes, nose, mouth and ears). The remaining 5 weeks will focus on drawing the portrait from start to finish. Students will also learn how to light and photograph reference for their portrait work. This class will use 3D scan technology to better illustrate the head in 3 dimensions.

Syllabus

  • Understanding the construct (block-in)
  • Understanding light on form
  • Basic anatomy of the skull
  • Understanding the structure of eyes, nose, mouth, and ears
  • Preparing reference for portraiture (lighting and photography)
  • Rendering light and dark (the value scale)

Materials

  • 2B, HB, 2H Pencils (one of each) OR Staedtler Drafting Pencil (2mm leads, try and get the drafting pencil with HB or 2B leads)
  • Vine Charcoal
  • Kneaded Eraser
  • White Eraser
  • Tombow Eraser (round point)
  • Paper blending stump
  • Strathmore 400 Series (Smooth) paper, comes in sheets or pads
