Stone Carving I and II

Stone Carving I: Classical Techniques

$300 + $550 tools (1/4" flat, 1/4" bullnose, 1/4" pointed chisels, and nylon mallet) + $100 stone + GST
Prerequisite: None

An introduction to the materials, tools and techniques of classical stone carving. This is a foundation class for those interested in learning traditional mallet and chisel carving. Students will develop an understanding of the step by step process of subtraction and its guiding principles. Through the creation of a flower in relief, students will learn all elements of carving:

  • Layout and drawing the design
  • Transferring the drawing to stone
  • Gauging angles and depths
  • Working subtractively
  • Tooling and tool marks
  • Texturing and sparrow pecking 
  • Undercutting to create shadows
  • Time permitting: lettering, architectural accents and embellishments 

All materials are purchased through us when you register. This includes the stone, and a traditional mallet and three chisels which are custom made by instructor Robert Assie.

Stone Carving II: Foliage Vine Project

Prerequisite: Stone Carving I or equivalent experience

Stone Carving II progresses students into carving projects increasing in complexity, composition and scale. Projects are designed to further develop tool skills and material understanding. Students will learn to work from their drafted design and/or maquette to stone. Students must have the tools used in Stone Carving I or equivalent. All materials are purchased through us when you register. This includes the stone and 2 chisels which are custom made by instructor Robert Assie.

Prerequisite: Stone Carving II Foliage Vine or Green Man Project or equivalent experience

Progressing from Stone Carving II: Green man project or Foliage Vine Project, students will have the option of progressing further into architectural stone carving, lettering in stone or exploring human figurative elements. Elements include tool skills, texturing and design layout for deep relief carving. Students will learn to work from their own personal drafted design and/or maquette to stone. Students must have the tools used in Stone Carving I or equivalent. All materials are purchased through us when you register. This includes the stone and 2 chisels which are custom made by instructor Robert Assie.

Supplies

As well as the stone, traditional mallet, and chisels you purchase when you register, you will also need:

  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • One 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper
  • One sheet of carbon paper
  • A compass (the drawing tool not the navigational instrument!)
  • A depth gauge (ideal, see photo below) or a ruler
  • 8-12 cinder blocks and a cinder block cap (see photos below) depending on how tall you are
