Invitation for Awards Applications

The Department of English invites applications for the following awards in journalism, Canadian literature, and LGBTQ+ and human rights issues:

JB McGeachy Prize

J.B. McGeachy Prize in English - $700

Prize to support the cost of expenses incurred in the pursuit of journalism (e.g. equipment, research, production, tuition for a school of Journalism).

  • Open to students at the University of Saskatchewan for works in journalism in any medium including print, web, radio, and TV, that have been published or broadcast in the last twelve months.
  • Selection is based on the merits of the published or broadcast works in journalism.
  • To apply, complete the online application in the Scholarships and Bursaries channel in PAWS, and submit one or two published or broadcast works (electronic copy, website link, etc.) to asg.studentawards@usask.ca.

AvieBennett

Avie Bennett Prize in Canadian Literature - $650 & Set of New Canadian Library Books

Prize to recognize an outstanding essay in Canadian Literature.

  • Open to students in any year of an undergraduate degree program who have written a Canadian Literature essay for a University of Saskatchewan English class.
  • Selection is based on the merits of the Canadian Literature essay.
  • To apply, complete the online application in the Scholarships and Bursaries channel in PAWS, and submit a Canadian Literature essay from an English class in the regular session to asg.studentawards@usask.ca.

Note: English majors who have completed at least six credit units in Canadian Literature may use the same essay to apply for the Yuans Award in Canadian Literature. Check off both awards in the PAWS application, and indicate in the email submission that the essay is for the Bennett Prize and the Yuans Award.

Yuans Award

Yuans Award in Canadian Literature - $500

Award to recognize an outstanding essay and overall achievement in Canadian Literature.

  • Open to undergraduate English majors who have completed at least six credit units in Canadian literature, and who have written a Canadian Literature essay for a University of Saskatchewan English class in the academic year.
  • Selection is based on academic achievement and the merits of the Canadian Literature essay.
  • To apply, complete the online application in the Scholarships and Bursaries channel in PAWS, and submit a Canadian Literature essay from an English class in the regular session to asg.studentawards@usask.ca.

Note: The same essay may be used to apply for the Avie Bennett Prize in Canadian Literature. Check off both awards in the PAWS application, and indicate in the email submission that the essay is for the Yuans Award and the Bennett Prize.

Peter T. Millard Scholarship- $1,000-$3,000 (value varies)

  • Open to undergraduate students in any college for outstanding scholarly or artistic work related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer/questioning or human rights issues completed for a University of Saskatchewan class. Eligible works include essays, reports, creative writing, artworks or portfolios, and individual projects, worth at least 10% of the final grade for a three-credit unit course, or 20% for a six-credit unit course.
  • Selection is based on the merits of the works.
  • To apply, complete the online application in the Scholarships and Bursaries channel in PAWS, and submit LGBTQ+ or human rights works accompanied by a letter from the class instructor identifying the weighting and mark of the assignment to awards.documents@usask.ca.
