David
F. Hiatt

On April 30th, David F. Hiatt passed away peacefully at his home in Whaletown, British Columbia with his beloved wife of 48 years, Ann, by his side. Born July 6th, 1930 in Richmond, Indiana to James and Naomi Hiatt (nee Edgerton), David attended Earlham College where he studied American literature. He completed his PhD in American Literature in 1960 at the University of New Mexico and then taught English at Caroll College and the University of New Mexico. In 1971, David, along with his second wife Ann, immigrated to Saskatoon where he taught at the University of Saskatchewan for 20 years. In addition to being a published poet and editor, he is remembered by his colleagues as a leader in the English Department and as a dedicated and excellent instructor by the students he taught. Upon his retirement, David and Ann moved to Cortes Island, BC in 1991. He didn't slow down though; at 62 he became a licensed EMR and dedicated himself to improving health care on the island. He had a deep love of nature and was highly knowledgeable about local flora, bird and wildlife populations and loved to garden. David is survived by his wife Ann and three sons; Samuel (Dawn), Benjamin, Simon (Joy), his 2 grandchildren Tara & Ginger and is predeceased by his daughter Sarah. His family will remember him for his sense of humour, strong will and work ethic. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. The Hiatt Family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Canadian Doctors Without Borders.

Plant a tree: How does it work

When your purchase is complete, a post will be made on the tribute wall of the deceased signifying the planting of a memorial tree.

An official certificate recognizing your purchase will be included with your email receipt. You can then forward the email to the family or print it and give it to them personally.

After an order is placed, our forestry partners will plant the tree in the area of greatest need (nearest the funeral home), according to the planting schedule for the year.

Due to seasonal conditions, the tree planting takes place during the spring and summer.

Tree Planting Timeline

Orders placed in:
