Title: Winning Bar Bets (and Losing Friends) with Combinatorial Game Theory
Abstract: Combinatorial game theory is a branch of combinatorics that lets us formally analyze winning and losing strategies in games with perfect information, including Chess, Checkers, TicTacToe and Go.
We will talk about the role of classical computing in the study of combinatorial games, learn how to win (or not lose!) some simple combinatorial games, and see how games can be nicely modelled using the most basic of mathematical tools — sets.
This talk is accessible to a wide undergraduate audience. It will assume only that you are interested in the topic and are willing to participate.
