Speaker: Dr. Mark Adler (Brandeis University)

Date / Time: Thursday, October 18th @ 4:00 P.M.

Location: ARTS 214

Title: Random permutations, percolations, tilings, and universality

Abstract: In this general audience talk, we discuss a card game, its connection to percolation theory, random sorting, random matrix theory, and Brownian motion. Also, these things connect to various tiling problems, through universality. Even the ability to balance your checkbook is not necessary to enjoy this talk, although it might be helpful in other situations.

Note for Grad Students: Attendance is mandatory at this talk for graduate students in Math & Stats. There will be a sign-in sheet at the talk.
