Awards for Students in English

The Department of English invites applications for the following 2025-2026 awards:

Hannon Scholarships (English) - $5,000, SEVERAL available!

The Ronald and Mary Dyck Memorial Award - $1,000 x 2

The Mary Lou Ogle Award for the Study of Communications - $5,000

DEADLINE DATE: October 1, 2025


Hannon Scholarships (English) - $5,000, SEVERAL available!

  • Open to third and fourth-year English majors in a BA four-year or Honours program.
  • Selection is based on academic achievement, university and community involvement, and character.
  • To apply, complete the online application in the Scholarships and Bursaries channel in PAWS, uploading a character reference and CV. Should your referee choose, they may email the letter of reference directly to asg.studentawards@usask.ca.

The Ronald and Mary Dyck Memorial Award - $1,000 x 2

  • Open to third or fourth-year English majors who have graduated from a Saskatchewan High School in a town or city with fewer than 100,000 residents.
  • Selection is based on the merits of an essay on liberal arts education.
  • To apply, complete the online application in the Scholarships and Bursaries channel in PAWS, uploading an essay of no more than 750 words on the value of a liberal arts education in modern society. *Please note that the essay is shared with the donors.

The Mary Lou Ogle Award for the Study of Communications - $5,000

  • Open to third or fourth-year English majors who are residents of Saskatchewan and who have graduated from a Saskatchewan High School.
  • Selection is based on financial need and the merits of a communications essay.
  • To apply, complete the online application in the Scholarships and Bursaries channel in PAWS, uploading an essay of approximately 500 words outlining career intentions relating to communications. This includes, but is not limited to, work in journalism (print or other media); editing and publishing; library and information science; education; speech pathology; corporate, government, or non-profit communications; public relations; and advertising.

Usask Undergraduate Awards Policy – Credit Unit Requirements:
In order to receive University of Saskatchewan undergraduate student awards, you must be a full-time student (18 credit units) during the regular session of the academic year, as well as the previous regular session for continuing students (year 2+), unless:

  • You are registered with a reduced course load (12 credit units) through Access and Equity Services (AES).
  • You are fewer than 18 credit units away from completing your degree, requiring full-time enrollment (9 credit units) in either the fall or winter term only.
  • The award is a prize specific to a course or project, or for convocation, and therefore not subject to a credit unit minimum.
  • The award Terms of Reference state alternative consideration that is not subject to a credit unit minimum.
