Abstract
Since 1961, oil pipeline corporations have provided data to the National Energy Board of Canada concerning incidents on oil and gas pipelines that cross interprovincial and international borders in Canada. These data were compiled in reports that included a range of information from incident types, product types, causes, environmental effects, and locations. This paper will present work-in-progress on a project to map onshore oil pipeline spills in the period from 1961 to 1996 using these pipeline incident reports. The project uses ArcGIS to map and cross-reference data from the National Energy Board of Canada and the U.S. Energy Information Administration to provide spatial visualizations of the history of onshore oil pipeline spills in Canada.
