About me

Effective Oct. 24, 2015, Peter Stoicheff is the 11th president of the University of Saskatchewan.

Peter Stoicheff, PhD, has served as dean of the College of Arts and Science at the University of Saskatchewan since 2011. The hallmark of his deanship was a focus on bringing together in a collaborative structure the sciences, social sciences, and humanities and fine arts.

Dr. Stoicheff holds an undergraduate degree in English and history (1978) from Queen's University and as master's of arts (1980) and PhD (1983) in English literature from the University of Toronto. He joined the English department as faculty member in 1986. From 2005-2010, he was vice-dean humanities and fine arts in the College of Arts and Science.

He is highly regarded internationally for his widely published work in modern American literature and on the history and future of the book. He is the author and editor of, and contributor to, books on modern American poetry (The Hall of Mirrors: Drafts & Fragments and the End of Ezra Pound's Cantos, University of Michigan Press), the history and future of the book (The Future of the Page, University of Toronto Press; The Cambridge Companion to the History of the Book, Cambridge University Press) and literature and science (Chaos and Order: Complex Dynamics in Literature and Science, University of Chicago Press). He has authored and edited hypertext versions of literary works, written extensively about arts and culture, and is a sought-after speaker.

An active scholar throughout his career, Stoicheff has served in national and provincial leadership roles with respect to research, scholarly and artistic work, including serving on the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) National Committee and the SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships Committee. In his administrative and academic roles, he was the university's SSHRC co-ordinator and oversaw creation of the U of S Digital Research Centre and the Interdisciplinary Centre for Culture and Creativity. He received the university's Graduate Supervisor Award in 2002.

Peter and his wife Kathryn Warden, director of research profile and impact at the U of S, are longtime residents of Saskatoon and have two children, Alixandra and Christopher.

A classical guitarist and composer, Peter has produced two acoustic guitar albums, Cantos I and Ethereal Steel. Since 2013, he has served on the Remai Modern Art Gallery of Saskatchewan Board of Trustees.

Research

United States guitar hypertext literature poetry

Peter Stoicheff is a Professor in the English Department. He has studied the properties of complexity in modern texts such as Ezra Pound's Cantos, William Carlos Williams' Paterson, and Charles Olson's Maximus. On this topic he has written articles, delivered lectures, and published a book: The Hall of Mirrors: Drafts & Fragments and the End of Ezra Pound's Cantos (U of Michigan P, 1995). That work led him to write articles on the self-reflexive properties of American texts such as William Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury and Ambrose Bierce's "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge." He has also worked on the affinity between self-organizing structures in "Chaos Science" and literature and has extended that investigation to consider various relationships between scientific and humanistic inquiry. A SSHRCC grant has supported this research as well as two other projects: writing a chapter in Chaos and Order: Complex Dynamics in Literature and Science, ed. N. K. Hayles (U of Chicago P, 1991). He is currently editing a collection of essays on reciprocities between the sciences and the humanities, and developing interests in hypertext and its cultural and literary implications.

His books include The Hall of Mirrors (University of Michigan Press) and The Future of the Page (U of T Press). He also composes for and performs on the acoustic guitar. His CDs include Cantos I: Guitar and Ethereal Steel.
