Artist's Talk:

Rebecca Belmore

Monday, March 4

12:00 Noon

Gordon Snelgrove Gallery

Rebecca Belmore is a renowned Anishinabe artist. Over the last two decades, she has created powerful site-specific performances, photographs and installations that remind viewers of the importance of the visual arts and culture in any process of cultural transformation. Born in Upsala, Ontario, Belmore has exhibited her work nationally and internationally since the late 1980s. In 2005, she represented Canada at the Venice Biennale, where she exhibited the video-based installation Fountain. She is the first Aboriginal woman to represent Canada at the Biennale. In her powerful multi-disciplinary praxis, Belmore reveals a long-standing commitment to creating decolonizing imagery that both centers Aboriginal worldviews and histories, and, interrogates the dynamics of the colonial enterprise and its violent legacies in the present.
