Observatory Open for Solar Eclipse Viewing

The U of S Observatory (108 Wiggins Road) will be open to the public free of charge on Thursday, Oct. 23 for viewing of that afternoon's partial solar eclipse.

The viewing begins at 2:45 p.m. and will last until the sun becomes hidden by campus buildings. The maximum eclipse occurs at 4:13 p.m. when 72% of the sun’s diameter will be covered by the moon. Members of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada will set up additional telescopes outside the observatory for viewing of the eclipse.

It should be stressed that viewing of the sun should only be done using a proper solar filter such as the ones used at the campus observatory. Do not stare at the sun without proper eye protection.
