Student to spend summer in Germany on scholarship

Marzieh EskandariA graduate student in the Department of Philosophy is the recipient of a scholarship granting admission to a summer study program in Germany.

Marzieh Eskandari will spend four weeks this July and August participating in the 16th International Summer University (ISU) at the University of Marburg. There she will hone her German language skills and study issues in Middle Eastern politics.

Eskandari completed a BSc in physics and an MSc in philosophy of science in her home country of Iran before coming to the U of S to pursue a second master’s degree in philosophy. She learned of the ISU scholarship from her language professor, Josephin Dick, while taking an extra undergraduate course on German.

It was “just the right” opportunity for Eskandari, who has a deep personal and academic interest in Middle Eastern issues and who was looking for a way to advance her knowledge of German.

“Studying German in Germany is a really different experience,” she says. “Having the opportunity to practice a language among the natives of that language, it’s just an exceptional opportunity to enhance your skills.”

Eskandari, who already speaks Persian, Turkish and English, is studying German so that she can read the works of the major German philosophers in their original language.

The scholarship she received covers her tuition for the program, her accommodation in Marburg, and a few extras such as cultural day trips.

The philosophy student was so excited about the opportunity, she was planning her budget and choosing her courses before she’d even heard whether she’d gotten the scholarship.

“It was just perfect,” she says. “I was so happy.”
