News

Associate Professor Carin Holroyd (Department of Political Studies) is the 2016 recipient of the J.W. George Ivany Internationalization Award.

Presented annually by the University of Saskatchewan, the J.W. George Ivany Internationalization Award recognizes an individual who greatly enhances the university’s international activities and inspires a global perspective in students.

Holroyd is one of Canada’s leading Japan studies specialists, and is frequently invited to speak at national and international conferences, colleges and universities on her area of expertise. She is president of the Japan Studies Association of Canada and is the founder and president of the Vietnam Education Society, a charity devoted to addressing the educational challenges facing children in rural Vietnam.

The Government of Vietnam honoured Holroyd in 2015 for her dedication and commitment to raising funds and establishing schools, lunch programs and scholarships. In May 2016, Holroyd received a Meritorious Service Medal from the Governor General of Canada for her charitable and community work related to the Vietnam Education Society. She has helped to raise over $700,000, build nine different educational facilities in rural Vietnam and provide funding for annual summer camps and school support for young girls at risk of human trafficking.

In May 2015, Holroyd was accepted to the UNICEF 25th Team, established to support Canada's leadership on maternal and child health. This team of 60 women will invest over four years in lifesaving projects in Cambodia, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Namibia and Peru. The investment will help more than two million women and children.

Holroyd directs the College of Arts & Science’s international studies program. She promotes study abroad, international volunteer engagement and exchange opportunities to her students, offering support to those interested in overseas experiences to ensure successful participation in these valuable programs. Holroyd encourages her students to engage globally, to make major and sustained contributions to international understanding through scholarship.

Holroyd will be presented with her award at the 2016 Fall Convocation on Oct. 22.
