(CANCELLED) Building Portable MRIs for Astronauts and Behavioural Research

A presentation by Gordon Sarty, part of the Department of Psychology’s colloquium series

Event

Please note that this presentation has been cancelled

Presented by Gordon Sarty, head, Department of Psychology, University of Saskatchewan

3:00 pm

Gordon Sarty will give an overview of the technology his team has been developing to build portable MRIs. Their work with the Canadian Space Agency will allow MRI to be used for the first time in space on the International Space Station. This first space MRI will image muscle and bone in astronaut ankles in the early 2020s. A head MRI will follow. The researchers are working to merge Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS), Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT), Electroencelography (EEG) and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) as integral parts of the MRI. As well, work has begun on using diamonds with nitrogen vacancies, one of a new breed of emerging quantum materials, for more sensitive MRI and the addition of Magnetoencelography (MEG) to the mix. This next generation of hybrid MRIs will have many applications and the team is literally shooting for the Moon to make one for the proposed Deep Space Gateway.

Members of the university community and the general public are welcome to attend this presentation, which is part of the Department of Psychology’s monthly colloquium series.
