There are a variety of student awards, bursaries, and scholarships available for Department of Music students. Students are also eligible for general College of Arts and Science scholarships and awards, and are encouraged to apply for external awards in addition to those provided by the university.

Bursaries

Bursaries are opened for application in the fall through the PAWS Scholarships and Bursaries channel with an annual deadline of October 1st. Selection is based on financial need.

  • Open to Music students who have been residents of Saskatchewan for two years prior to entering the music program.

  • Open to B.Mus and B.Mus Mus.Ed students enrolled in Applied Lessons who are completing either MUAP 143, 243, 343, or 443 in Term 1, and enrolled in the corresponding MUAP 145, 245, 345, and 445 in Term 2. Both courses must be taken in the regular session. The bursary will be revoked should a recipient withdraw from a MUAP course in the academic year the bursary is awarded.
  • Selection is based on financial need. Preference to students who have self-declared as Indigenous.

  • Open to continuing undergraduate students pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Music Education (B.Mus. Mus.Ed) degree. To be eligible students must demonstrate financial need.
  • Selection is based on financial need, taking academic achievement into consideration, as determined by the Award Committee.

  • Open to Music majors with a focus on honing applied music or compositional skills, who have completed one or more years of study and has achieved a minimum cumulative average of 75% and a minimum major average of 80%.

Scholarships and Awards (Application)

Award Value: $2,500

  • Open to undergraduate and graduate students majoring in Music in the College of Arts & Science who are pursuing experiential learning opportunities related to their degree. Travel must occur within 12 months of the time the award is made. Evidence of travel will be required.
  • Selection is based on the merits of the submission.

To apply, submit a brief travel proposal to asg.studentawards@usask.ca outlining plans and how they relate to your course of study. Deadline: November 30, annually. 

Award Value: $500

  • Awarded to a third or fourth year Music Education student at the University of Saskatchewan on the basis of academic achievement and the student’s contribution in performing areas and groups within the Department of Music.
  • The successful recipient will receive a scholarship and will be presented with the award at the Saskatchewan Music Conference.

Awards based on academic achievement and/or musicianship, and do not require an application. Students will be informed of the recipients in early fall.

  • Selection is based on talent, merit and promise as determined by the award committee. Accomplishment in their field may be evidenced by course work as well as extra-curricular and charitable activities.

  • Open to undergraduate students enrolled in any music degree program (B.Mus, B.ED/B.Mus, Mus.Ed) or the B.A. degree with music as a major and to full-time graduate students in any graduate program with a major music component at the University of Saskatchewan.

  • Open to full-time or part-time B.Mus or M.Mus students in any year of their program of study. Candidates must be involved within the Department of Music in a manner determined to be appropriate by the Department of Music Awards Committee, as well as display strong musical performance and/or strong musical academic skills.  
  • Selection is based on strong academic music grades and/or musical performance skills

  • Open to students in their final year of a B.Mus or B.Mus Mus.Ed degree program, whose majors are wind, percussion, or string performance and who are participating members of the University of Saskatchewan Wind Orchestra.

  • Open to continuing undergraduate students pursuing a B.Mus or B.Ed/B.Mus degree program, with preference given to students who are in a jazz ensemble. 
  • Selection is based upon musicianship and academic performance in a student's applied lesson and ensemble studies.
