About Graduate Programs

The Department of History offers graduate courses leading to the Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.

MA Degree in History

All MA students are required to complete 9 credit units of courses and prepare a thesis.  The courses include: HIST 881.3 (T1): Historiography; HIST 883.3 (T1): Historical Research Methods; HIST 884.3 (T2): Historical Writing.  If recommended by the advisory committee, students may take HIST 860.3, the Ethnohistory Fieldschool as a substitute for HIST 883.3.

PhD Degree in History

All PhD students are required to complete 12 credit units of comprehensive field courses and prepare a dissertation.  Course work normally consists of reading courses organized around the three comprehensive fields: one 6 credit unit course for the major field and two 3 credit unit courses for each of the minor fields.
