English Undergraduate Wins Best Paper Prize

Congratulations to English Honours student Lizette Gerber, who along with Mariam Goubran, has won a Best Paper Prize for the 2017-2018 issues of the University of Saskatchewan Undergraduate Research Journal (USURJ).

Lizette Gerber’s paper Transgender Bodies in "The Little Mermaid" and Swim Thru Fire impressed the judges with its highly original analysis of a well-known fairy tale and a more recent web comic. This use of theory applied to both text and new media together results in a unique contribution to knowledge.

Mariam Goubran’s paper Investigating the Molecular Basis of Rubella Virus-Induced Teratogenesis: A Literature Review expertly weaves together existing medical research to clearly explain our current understanding of the molecular basis of rubella-induced birth defects.

An honourable mention also goes to English Honours student Jana Mujkić (“A Lost Pulse of Feeling”: Reconnecting with the “Hidden Self” in Matthew Arnold’s “Buried Life”). Jana’s masterful critique of Matthew Arnold’s “Buried Life” brings a new perspective to an old problem in this area of scholarship.
